30th anniversary for ABS braking From innovation to standard equipment, Bosch celebrates in 2008 30 years of safe braking with the ABS. First introduced in 1978, this system prevents from wheels locking during an emergency braking. Still today, it’s the basis of all active safety systems. ABS became a standard equipment in Europe, US and Japan. In 2007, 76 percent of all the new vehicles sold in the world were fitted with an ABS.
ESC coming soon as a standard equipment ? After the US, that decided to make ESC (Electronic Stability Control, formerly ESP) mandatory for all the vehicles sold in this country by 2012, Europe, China, India and Japan should follow. The United Nations auto safety working group has decided, jointly with the American NHTS (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), to adopt ESC as a global technical regulation. Numerous studies have proven that this system could save lives.
Zero accident vision in 2020 for Volvo
The Swedish car maker’s aim is to release cars that can avoid accidents in 2020. Thanks to sensors (radars and cameras), Volvo vehicles could be able to mitigate collisions. The driver will be monitored, as the surrounds of the car. In case of danger, the vehicle will be able to brake, in order to avoid the accident or reduce the injuries for the passengers. Volvo has started to produce city safety system that can brake automatically in cities, at a speed until 30 km/h.
High tech features on new 7 Series from BMW This flagship model comes with an array of high tech equipments, in the field of safety (night vision with pedestrians detection, high beam assistant, lane departure warning), comfort (head up display, ACC with stop & go function) and telematics (high end navigation system with 3D display, emergency call, Internet access with Connected drive services). There is also a new I Drive, more intuitive and giving access to all the menus of the car.
.Volkswagen 2028 The german car maker has launched a website called www.volkswagen2028.com. It tells VW’s vision for future cars, cleaner, safer and with telematics services. For instance, Volkswagen imagines cars able to talk to each other, as with traffic lights, in order to improve the traffic. “One”, “Ego” and “Room” are the three cars giving this idea of an automobile giving driving pleasure without emissions.

Jean Pierre Couronne, President of the SIA (French Automotive Engineers Society)
Why did the SIA decide to partner with IAEC Congress ? I would like to remind that the SIA (Société des Ingénieurs de l’Automobile) is a network of 8.000 automotive engineers and managers whose aim is to contribute to the development and the sharing of the knowledge. The IAEC Congress is, since several years, an important event for engineers involved in automotive electronics. The SIA has been invited to set up a workshop for one day during this event, so we decided to present our automotive clusters and to show their activities through projects in automotive electronics applications.
What role do you play in automotive technology (training, knowledge sharing, networking), and more particularly in the field of electronics ? A very important role, because it’s the mission of the SIA ! The knowledge sharing on innovative topics and confrontation of ideas between experts is made thanks to our publications, and the magazine (« Ingénieurs de l’Automobile »). We also set up events such as congresses, technical days, workshops and training. More precisely, the SIA has a technical department dedicated to automotive electronics (and very active) that organises many events around this domain. The next congresses will be « VISION » in october 2008 and « Automotive Power Electronics » in march 2009. An important part of the training that we ensure concerns automotive electronics. We set up with success several training programmes on the new standard of software architecture « AUTOSAR » and about « Safety operations of automotive electronics and mecatronics systems ». Last but not least, we pave the way for future managers of our industry, through meetings in universities. We invite them to join automotive industry and to choose new jobs linked to automotive electronics and mecatronics.
Can you tell us more about your Vision Congress, that is a very popular meeting and has an international reputation ? The SIA is organising this event with success since 2002. VISION is about improvement of automotive driving in bad conditions (night, fog, rain, snow… The innovations showcased contribute to a dramatic improvement of road safety and a reduction of accidents. This year, it is held on october 7th and 8th, in Versailles. The presentation of demo cars during night tests, on the Versailles Satory test track, is an exclusivity very appreciated by the attendees. Our programme (around thirty conferences, posters, booths, exhibition with vehicles and latest technologies will contribute to enhance exchanges between our industry representatives with a strong international public (Germany, Sweden, Japan, Italy, United States, Switzerland, Austria, Israël,…).
But, for more information about this international congress, don’t hesitate to visit our website : www.sia.fr
